Why leaving a legacy to Momentum matters

“A few years ago, my wife and I were looking to support a local charity when we discovered Momentum. The charity really resonated with us, so we met with Bianca Effemey, Momentum’s Founder, and quickly knew it was a cause we wanted to be part of. We made a donation to help fund a refurbishment project at Epsom Hospital, and I was invited to join as a trustee. In this role, I advise on commercial decisions and support projects where my experience can add value.
During my time as a trustee, I have seen the charity grow and expand the support it offers to families, and that has been incredibly rewarding to witness. Of course, it hasn’t always been easy. As a board of trustees, we have faced our share of challenges and have had to make some tough decisions along the way, but Momentum is in a great place for the future.
When it came to writing my will, I knew it was something I wanted to take my time with and get right, not just for me, but for my family too. Alongside the emotional decisions and the wish to support causes that matter, there are also practical considerations, like ensuring your estate is managed in a tax-efficient way.
I review my will every four or five years to reflect my current circumstances and thinking, as things naturally change over time. Having worked closely with Momentum and seen first-hand how valued their services are, I realised I could continue making a difference even when I am no longer here.
It is important to take your time when writing your will as it can be more thought-provoking than you might expect, with many layers to consider. You may go through several drafts before you reach a version that truly feels right for you. There is guidance and support available along the way.
I hope that by leaving a gift to Momentum, the incredible work the charity has done over the past 21 years can continue for another 21 years and beyond. It means a lot to me and my family to leave a small legacy and something positive when I am gone. Momentum’s work is necessary and the need for their services will not go away.
If you are thinking about leaving a gift in your will my advice would be to research what you believe in, and if you decide Momentum is the right charity for you, your legacy will go a long way.”
