How your legacy can help shape Momentum’s future
“Throughout my career in education, I was dedicated to creating opportunities for children and young people. Beginning as a teacher, I developed a firm belief that every child deserves the chance to reach their full potential, regardless of their circumstances.
Later in life, after meeting my husband, a police officer, we, along with the support of others, organised exciting activities for children and young people facing potentially life-threatening illnesses. These activities were tailored to their individual needs and brought immense joy to everyone involved.
When my husband passed away two years ago, I was talking to someone at the funeral parlour, and she mentioned Momentum. I went home and read about what they do, and it felt like everything they stood for aligned with our values – it truly ticked all the boxes.
Supporting families who have a child with cancer has always been important to us. Having experienced brain tumours and breast cancer myself, I know the difference practical support can make during such tough times both for the individual, the wider family, and community.
When I was writing my will recently and looking at the value of my estate, I realised that leaving a gift to charity is a very tax-efficient way to give. Having worked in the charity sector, I know just how difficult it can be to fundraise so I knew leaving a legacy gift would be well-received.
What really resonated with me about Momentum was how the charity recognises that childhood illness affects the whole family. My hope is that, for years to come, Momentum continues championing that message and supporting every family member. I feel truly humbled knowing that my support will carry on beyond my lifetime, and that my legacy of helping children and young people will continue to have an impact.
Writing my will was challenging – I have a large extended family and beyond the financial side, there is the emotional task of deciding how to share your estate and make sure everyone is treated fairly.
If circumstances allow and you can look beyond the needs of your own family, I encourage anyone to leave a legacy gift to Momentum – you will be making a valued difference to the lives of individuals and their families.
Writing a will can be expensive, so being able to do it free of charge through Octopus Legacy is fantastic. It is a big decision, and having step-by-step guidance along the way will make the entire process so much easier.”
