Spreading smiles – generous Poppy donates gifts
Momentum was there for Poppy and her family when she was being treated for Wilm’s tumour as a toddler, and the charity have remained close to their hearts.
Talking about the support Momentum gave the family, Poppy’s mum, Michelle, said: “Four years ago Poppy was diagnosed with cancer. When she was in hospital in Surrey, we were lucky enough to meet the wonderful people from Momentum Children’s Charity who visited my daughter’s hospital room and helped brighten her day during treatment. From the outset, I understood what Momentum could offer us, and they were always very good at staying in touch and asking us how we were. It almost feels like you get tailored support, depending on what each family needs.”
Touching on Poppy’s gift collection for Momentum, Michelle said: “A couple of years ago, Poppy’s sister, Amelie, came up with the idea to donate her birthday presents to Momentum, to bring some happiness to children going through cancer treatment and other illnesses. This year, Poppy wanted to do the same! She collected birthday presents and other gifts for Momentum to give to children they are helping. I am so incredibly proud of the girls for doing this, it is something they feel passionate about and have taken very seriously. We have called it our ‘toy drive’, an initiative we hope to continue. I think it is important the girls understand the importance of fundraising and helping others.”
Michelle continued: “With Christmas only a few months away, Poppy wanted to give some gifts of brand-new toys to Momentum, following in her big sister’s footsteps, who has sent some toys in the past. This is so children who are being treated for cancer can be given something to hopefully brighten their day. When Poppy was in hospital, we realised how valuable toys were – they were a comfort and distraction during treatment. Playing with toys can help to bring a sense of normality when children are away from their usual surroundings and can reduce feelings of stress, fear and anxiety.”
Speaking about her reason for doing the toy collection, Poppy shared, “I wanted to help the sick children who were like me.”
A huge thank you to both Poppy and Amelie for being so kind and thoughtful – your generosity will make a huge difference.
