Press release
Move for Momentum this September
Following a successful debut last year, Momentum is encouraging people to get active throughout September and help raise vital funds for families whose children are facing cancer.
Momentum Children’s Charity provides practical and emotional support to families across Surrey, London and Sussex whose child has cancer, helping them through one of the most challenging times in their lives.
Every year, around 1,900 children in the UK are diagnosed with cancer. By taking part in Move for Momentum, individuals, families, workplaces, clubs, schools, gyms and community groups can help ensure Momentum is there to provide vital practical and emotional support to families when they need it most.
Designed to be flexible and inclusive, the Move for Momentum challenge encourages people of all ages and abilities to get involved in a way that works for them. Whether participants choose to walk, run, dance, swim, stretch or take on another activity they enjoy, every move helps make a difference.
Ideas of how people can Move for Momentum include a daily walking challenge in September, a family bike ride, a hiking challenge, bouncing on a trampoline or taking part in an open water swim. Participants are also welcome think of their own unique challenge to complete.
Getting started couldn’t be easier. A free downloadable fundraising pack is packed with ideas, practical advice and everything participants need to plan their Move for Momentum challenge. It includes step-by-step guidance on creating a fundraising page, plus simple tips to help spread the word and inspire support from friends, family, colleagues and the wider community.
Sarah Woods, Chief Executive Officer at Momentum Children’s Charity said: “Move for Momentum is all about getting active in a way that works for you while making a real difference to local families facing childhood cancer. Whether you choose to walk, run, swim, dance or create your own challenge, every move helps us continue providing the practical and emotional support families need during incredibly difficult times.
“I will be revealing my own Move for Momentum challenge very soon, and I hope it inspires lots of others to get involved. However you decide to take part this September, every pound raised will help ensure Momentum can continue to be there for children with cancer, and their families, when they need us most.”

Notes to Editors:
Momentum Children’s Charity supports families across London, Surrey and Sussex whose children are facing cancer or a life-challenging condition. We partner with local hospitals to offer personally tailored support to care for the emotional and mental wellbeing of every single family member, through our family support workers. Our services include counselling, creative therapies, special experiences, and respite breaks. If the unthinkable happens, and a child dies, we offer specialist bereavement support through our Momentum Echoes service. The charity receives no government funding and is reliant entirely on voluntary support.
Founded in 2004, Momentum Children’s Charity was started when Bianca Effemey OBE was working as a receptionist on the Paediatrics Ward at Kingston Hospital. Side effects of chemotherapy treatment can be very painful, and she became aware of the impact they were having on young cancer patients. It became her mission to get white goods donated to the hospital which could be kept full of refreshments, providing some relief to children suffering with mouth ulcers caused by chemotherapy. Momentum has grown from a very small charity to now supporting over 2,800 individuals across 726 families in 2025/26. This includes 506 families with children in active treatment and 220 bereaved families.
