James Scott,22, who works as a manager for builders’ merchant, PTL, will do a tandem skydive on 15 September as part of Move for Momentum, a charity fundraising challenge which runs throughout Childhood Cancer Awareness Month.

PTL started supporting Momentum earlier this year when the charity was the beneficiary of their annual Golf Day. The family-run company raised £1300, and this was topped up by another £200 which James Scott generously donated from his winnings from another golf event.

Talking about his challenge James Scott said: “My colleagues at PTL brainstormed different ways we could raise money for Momentum, and I was nominated to do a skydive – I wasn’t even there at the time! This is the first time I have ever done an adrenaline-fuelled challenge – I am excited but fearing heights, I am slightly terrified too.”

Touching on why he is fundraising for Momentum, James Scott said: “I feel extremely fortunate that I have had a healthy, happy life. I know that is not the case for so many children and young people and that is why I am doing this – it means a lot that Momentum is a local charity and that so much of the money they raise goes directly back to helping families with unwell children. I have set myself an ambitious £5,000 fundraising target so I am hoping customers, colleagues, friends, and family will all get behind me to help me reach that total. Move for Momentum is a fantastic challenge as it is so simple and broad – you can literally do anything as long as you are moving and fundraising! I hope as many people as possible sign up to make it a big success.”

Momentum Children’s Charity provides practical and emotional support to families in Surrey, London and Sussex who have a child with cancer, helping them during incredibly difficult times.

The Move for Momentum challenge aims to be as flexible and inclusive as possible – allowing participants to choose how they move and how they measure the challenge, for example, meters, miles, or minutes. Ideas include cycling or walking to school every day in September, bouncing on a trampoline, swimming 1, 5, or 10 miles, or taking on a dancing challenge. People can even think of their own unique idea – anything goes as long as moving is involved.

Notes to Editors:

Momentum Children’s Charity supports families across London, Surrey and Sussex whose children are facing cancer or a life-challenging condition. We partner with local hospitals to offer personally tailored support to the entire family through our family support workers, both in hospital and at home. Our services include counselling, creative therapies, special experiences, and respite breaks. If the unthinkable happens, and a child dies, we offer specialist bereavement support. The charity receives no government funding and is reliant entirely on voluntary support.

Founded in 2004, Momentum Children’s Charity was started when Bianca Effemey OBE was working as a receptionist on the Paediatrics Ward at Kingston Hospital. Side effects of chemotherapy treatment can be very painful, and she became aware of the impact they were having on young cancer patients. It became her mission to get white goods donated to the hospital which could be kept full of refreshments, providing some relief to children suffering with mouth ulcers caused by chemotherapy. Momentum has grown from a very small charity to now supporting over 2,500 individuals across 688 families in 2024/25. This includes 502 families with children in active treatment and 186 bereaved families.
