David and 14-strong team complete Move for Momentum challenge
Talking about why he decided to organise a walking challenge, David said: “I enjoy walking. I wanted to raise the profile of Momentum, make friends with other volunteers who I had never met before, and raise funds for a cause which is dear to me.”
Touching on why he chose the route, which started near Momentum’s office in East Molesey, David said: “I chose a walk from East Molesey, taking in Bushy Park, through to Kingston where we had lunch. The second half of the walk took us along the Thames Path and back to East Molesey. The route was chosen as it started close to Creek Road, where Momentum’s office is, with good transport links and parking. It was a very scenic, peaceful route, particularly walking through Bushy Park, and it met my 10-mile aim.”
David continued: “I did not want to become directly involved in handling money or putting any undue pressure on anyone to donate. I am very conscious that many of us may have financial difficulties and therefore chose to ask anyone wanting to donate do this via Momentum’s website. This is a straightforward process where if given by a UK taxpayer, the donation is eligible for Gift Aid, which means the charity receives an extra 25%. This process allows for anonymity, while giving to a great cause.
Talking about meeting new volunteers at the event, David said: “There is a broad spectrum of life’s experiences amongst Momentum’s volunteers – young, old and anything in between. We all made new friendships and enjoyed each other’s company as we completed the challenge.”
Talking about organising the challenge, David said: “From initially thinking of the idea, to planning the event, and the day of the walk itself – the whole experience was enjoyable. As a volunteer, I know the importance of every penny raised for Momentum. It really was quite simple once I had the idea in my head – I worked out the route, talked to other boat volunteers about the event, and spread the word further with other people through Momentum’s Volunteer Co-Ordinator, Claire. It didn’t take lots of time to organise as I used an App on my phone to work out the route. We raised more than £500 which I am really pleased about.”
Encouraging others to support Momentum by becoming a volunteer, David said: “Young or old, we all have something to contribute. By giving up a small amount of time you are investing in young people and their families who are going through very turbulent times. Give it a try and I am sure that you will get back as much as you put in- it is a very worthwhile cause.”
A huge thank you to David and everyone who took part in his Move for Momentum challenge.
