Head of Finance
Summary
Reporting to the Founder/CEO and working closely with the SMT, the Head of Finance will lead and oversee on finance to deliver the charity’s strategy for growth and sustainability, whilst advising and developing on new systems and processes to underpin effective working across teams.
Location: Home working with option to work from office in East Molesey, Surrey (opposite Hampton Court Station)
Hours: Part time 12 – 16 hours per week (flexible for the right candidate)
Contract: Interim maternity cover (9 – 12 months)
Reports to: Founder/CEO
Salary: £45,000 – £48,000 FTE dependent on experience
Momentum Children’s Charity is a local organisation that supports families whose children have cancer or a life-challenging condition. The charity was founded 18 years ago by our current Chief Executive and has grown enormously over that time. We currently have partnerships with six local hospitals who refer families to us for support, which ranges from therapies and counselling, to respite holidays and special family experiences.
Reporting to the Founder and CEO and working closely with the SMT, the Head of Finance will lead and oversee on Finance to deliver the charity’s strategy for growth and sustainability, whilst advising and developing on new systems and processes to underpin effective working across teams. Momentum Children’s Charity is an ambitious and rapidly expanding charity. This means that our work is fast paced, our roles are broad, and there is a culture of being reactive and flexible, as the needs of the charity evolve. We are therefore seeking a dynamic individual who can really support our work and strategic goals.
With the support of a Finance Officer, your day-to-day duties will include, but not be limited to:
Finance
- Budgeting and reforecasting, supporting teams to predict income and expenditure and make sound financial decisions
- Production of management accounting information, including internal quarterly reports for Trustees
- Overseeing our internal bookkeeping, payment, and accounting processes, and improve these systems ongoingly
- Preparation of year end accounts and manage the relationship with the external accountants, working closely with relevant team members to ensure timely and accurate filing with the Charities Commission
- Supporting accurate budgeting and reporting for grant funding, including tracking spend of restricted funds
- Production of monthly payroll processing and submissions to HMRC and pension providers
- Attendance at quarterly Finance Committee and Trustee Board meetings to report on finances
PERSON SPECIFICATION
Essential
We are looking for the following skills, aptitude and experience, though you may be stronger in some areas than others:
- Hold a professional accountancy qualification with post-qualified experience
- Senior level experience, operating as Head of Finance/FD/CFO, in the Not-For-Profit Sector
- Experience across all areas of finance, from payments, record-keeping, setting and managing budgets through to financial modelling, forecasting, and working with external accountants
- Demonstrate the ability to lead, support, mentor and manage individuals with excellent people and communication skills (written and oral)
- A personal commitment to our mission; to help families of seriously ill children to keep moving forward
Desirable
You are more likely to be successful in your application if you have one or more of the following additional experiences:
- Experience of charity accounting, including reserves and management of restricted funds
- Technically strong in accountancy
- Experience of working with a Board and as part of a senior management team
- Excellent organisational and time management skills with the ability to prioritise work, handle conflicting demands and meeting deadlines.
