We’re looking for a Sussex-based person with a background in family support, who understands the importance of timely, meaningful, empathetic and non-judgemental support for all ages.
Summary
It’s an exciting time to join Momentum Children’s charity as we look to recruit new people to help establish our relationship with our new hospitals and grow our service, with the role of Family Support Worker playing a crucial part. The role involves supporting families whose children have cancer or a life-challenging illness providing practical and emotional needs-led support services, with the main aim being to maximise the opportunities and support available to them.
Working with our newest NHS Trust, University Hospitals Sussex, you will establish our Momentum caseload, develop our support services in each of the hospitals and build a collaborative partnership with the medical teams. This is a fantastic opportunity, and we will ensure that you have all the support needed to deliver our Momentum service as reflected in our other hospitals.
Position: Family Support Worker
Location: Community based around Worthing and Brighton, therefore candidates situated within close proximity to either hospital would be advantageous. You will also, once a month, need to travel to our Head Office in East Molesey (opposite Hampton Court Station).
Salary: £23,000 – 24,000 FTE dependant on experience.
Hours: Part time, 20 hours per week

Momentum Children’s Charity supports families whose children have cancer or a life-challenging condition. The charity was founded in 2004 by our current Chief Executive and has grown enormously over that time. We have partnerships with nine hospitals, in South West London, Surrey and Sussex, who refer families to us for our support, ranging from therapies to respite and special family experiences.
Our vision is to reach many more families in need of our support, and we are looking for people to join our team with passion, enthusiasm and dedication to help us continue to grow.
Deliver and improve reach of our support services in allocated hospitals (St Richards and Worthing Hospitals).
Work closely with the families, from the point of referral, to provide timely, needs-led, compassionate and non-judgmental support to all ages through home visits, email, phone, text and ward visits maintaining regular contact in line with charity guidelines.
Report back on needs and recommendations for support referring to a series of relevant therapies and services, where needed and refer child/siblings/parents for relevant therapies to Family Support Coordinator.
Attend Family Support Team meetings to share family information, discuss issues and recommendations, review processes for support, and monitor outcomes/impact
Keep regular track of family needs, monitoring this via our internal measurement tool.
Weekly visits to hospitals engaging with both Momentum and non-Momentum families in need of support.
Implement continual training with medical professionals to help build our partnership and spread awareness.
Enhance relationships and keep regular contact with key personnel within the paediatric team at the hospitals and actively encourage and facilitate prompt updates on both new and existing patients.
Highlight grandparents in need of support and signpost to our grandparent service.
Transition bereaved families across to our Echoes Service.
Plan and manage family support events relevant to your caseload alongside Family Support Manager.
Input, update and maintain accurate records on database in line with Momentum’s requirements.
Make sure that your delivery of family support services is in line with the budget and the overall charity Business Plan.
Support the marketing and fundraising team through the provision of family updates, photographs and case studies.
Relay supporter contact information to appropriate internal contacts.
Attend relevant training appropriate to the post of Family Support Worker.
Flexibility to attend family support events, which may involve evenings or weekends.
Undertake regular supervision.
Work within Momentum’s Safeguarding and Code of Conduct policy. Report any safeguarding concerns to Momentum’s Safeguarding lead in a timely manner.
Act as a professional representative of the charity for both internal and external audiences.
Have a good level of internet access at home to enable remote working where required.
Other ad hoc duties in line with your role.
Experience of direct work with children and their families.
Level 3 in Safeguarding and enhanced DBS clearance.
Ability to work professionally, independently, innovatively and diligently with the ability to work flexibly and adaptable to evolving needs of service.
Ability to work on own initiative and as part of a team along with being effective at managing resources and time.
Responsive and empathetic to others needs and concerns with an ability to work in a people oriented, emotional environment work in partnership with families.
Confident using IT including Microsoft Office as well as recording of caseload updates on relevant databases.
Valid UK Driver’s license with access to a car is essential for this role.
Proven ability to work within a team, which may include a wider team, working collaboratively with relevant agencies, e.g. NHS services and third sector agencies is desirable.
Professional experience in bereavement would be advantageous.
